When I first moved to Hungary, there was no connection to the country, other than the job. I came to take over editorship of The Budapest Sun, pure and simple. I thought I might stay here five years or so.
Soon, I had fallen for The Sun (editors are supposed to have a special attachment to their "first" paper) and the job. Producing something that provided a link between and for our disparate readership was a rewarding, and at times humbling, challenge.
And I had fallen for this contradictory, sometimes confusing, often annoying, but ultimately enriching country. I loved (and still do) its history, its wine, its sense of self (although that can also be annoying at times). And then I fell for a beautiful Hungarian lawyer.
Now there are hundreds of connections to Hungary, and they have buried themselves deep beneath my skin. My wife and I have built our own house, and are raising a growing Anglo-Hungarian family. I stay, because Hungary is home. |
